The 8th World Water Forum will have Water and Climate Change as one of its central themes, focusing on climate risk assessment, water safety and protection of people and livelihoods. In order to reach that, four topics have been set to comprise the debate questions under Climate. The following topics should split into Thematic Sessions and other debate stages during the 8th World Water Forum in 2018:

  1. Managing risk and uncertainty for resilience and disaster preparedness
  2. Water and adaptation to climate change
  3. Water and climate change mitigation
  4. Climate science and water management: the communication between science and decision/policy making

Considering the above topics about Climate:

  1. What are the major challenges under each topic that concern civil society and communities and need to be raised for debate during the 8th World Water Forum?
  2. How those challenges apply to problems in your city, community or neighbouring surroundings?

Your feedback is going to support the organisation instances of the Forum in the definition of Thematic Sessions and other opportunities for debate during the event.

I think we should consider that there are climate change impacts in grondwater as well.  The recharge rate is modified with the rain, evaporation (and evapotranspiration) conditions and with overland flow.  This aspect should be incorporate in the introduction of this thematic forum.  Take into account that groundwater is supply source for millons people, not only for livehood but economical and social development and ecosystems manteinance.  Groundwater is an invisible resource that is affected by climate change in quantity and its quality.

Daene McKinney replied:

Dear Marta, Groundwater is definitely a key component of the hydrologic cycle and water management.  The imacts of climate change on groundwater are extensive and aquifer levels have been depleted in many areas due to this which, as you point out, also causes problems of water quality. It will be good if we can make linkages between the climate change aspects of groundwater as well as to the other Themes.

Regarding the topic "d) Climate science and water management: the communication between science and decision / policy making", I would like to point out the following issue: the XVI World Water Congress organized by IWRA, to be held in Cancún by the end of May, has as its general theme "Bridging Science and Policy" and will feature a High Level Panel on Water and Climate. In this context, what should be done so that the discussion of this important topic has a connection and complementarity between the two events?

Certainly a great opportunity to discuss such matters. So let me throw my two coins: Concerning risk management related to climate change, it is my sure believe that the most tricking point is communicating the risk. As on the field of climate change  and risk analysis  Science far more than one concept is implied, what would be the sure balance between Science and communication? To what extent are they dissimilar?

Rogério Campos replied:

Excellent point, Márcio. "Communicating the risk", I suppose, is on environmental education, a matter of concern especially in Brazil. It encloses water reuse, also. Let us discuss this here and during the Forum. Thank you for your participation.
