Providing global access to safe water and sanitation – and thus increasing human health and dignity particularly of poorest populations – requires strong capacities and good governance structures and mechanisms, as well as the ability to share experiences, practices and knowledge. Any action should consider long-term sustainability.

The 8th World Water Forum will host focused discussions on these cross-cutting subjects – capacity, governance, sharing and sustainability – in order to identify the main hindrances and actions required to overcome difficulties that are common to the 6 core themes (climate, people, development, urban, ecosystems and financing).

Dear Maly,
I cannot agree more! Face-to-face discussions and sharing is absolutely crucial!
Thank you for sharing the info about AGUASAN www.aguasan.ch. It is great that the website is so informative. I hope, the full documentation folder of the recent event from this year will soon be made available following the traditions from the previous years?
As you rose the issue about differences and sharing, will you elaborate a bit about the importance of different water culture for open exchange and transparent sharing?

The WHO/UNICEF JMP has published its first report of the SDG period, Progress on drinking water, sanitation and hygiene: 2017 update and SDG baselines. The report introduces and defines the new indicators of safely managed drinking water and sanitation services. Estimates of safely managed drinking water services, the indicator for SDG target 6.1, are presented for 96 countries, while estimates are provided for safely managed sanitation services (target 6.2) for 84 countries. SDG target 6.2 also includes hygiene, and the JMP has rebranded itself as the WHO/UNICEF Joint Monitoring Programme for Water Supply, Sanitation and Hygiene....Read more

Dear Dr. Kunjappy,

Thank you very much for sharing the findings of the WHO/UNICEF JMP report. The reported situation is really alarming!

Will you mind to share your understanding of how the global water society would need to tackle efficiantly this problem? My opinion is that decision-makers are abliged to find a way to involve really all stakeholders: public, private, civil society; women and men, young and old; bottom-up and top-down.

Agenda 2030 is ambitious and the time is short!

Dear Ademar,

Following your previous contribution, will you please share some details of how in Brazilian situation you manage to involve all stakeholders in water and sanitation programs and projects; are these usually shared decisions and implementation; is there some specific policy addressing the specific needs of women and girls, of old people, of peple with specific needs... How all stakeholders with varied and sometimes contradicting needs share common solutions? Are top-down or bottom-up approaches more successful?

Dear colleagues, my comment is about water sharing, as a topic that can have different expressions depending on categories of communities. Water sharing is best applicable to African communities since population in developed countries can fully have access to clean water. In contradiction, the range of between 10-30% of the population in poor communities can afford the access of clean water. Different approaches have since longtime tested to reduce this rate of poor communities’ access to water ratio. These were boreholes ground water, river water treatment and distribution, underground water source extraction, and rain water harvesting....Read more

Hi everyone. I should answer those previews questions, but I am asking if there is any discussion about regulation of sanitation in developing countries, like Brazil? Here, we dont have a single Regulatory Agency, but many of them. Is there any specific discussion about this ? Thank you very much.

Hi Thalita,

This is a very pressing matter in fact, and the idea is that we duscuss sanitation from various perspectives. However, at this moment we are focusing on the Capacity Building. I will make a note so we can come back to regulation/ governance, but I encourage you to share this thought in the other discussions, specifically Urban and Finance. What are the key structures that can ensure we achieve the SDG 6? We definitively have to discuss that at some point.

Best regards,

Mariana.

What is your observation: who among the stakeholders is most enthusistic about implementation of the system with plastic bottles you proposed?
