The 8th World Water Forum will have Water for Sustainable Development as one of its central themes, focusing on water for human activities and the role of water use in different sectors and in countries’ development. In order to reach that, four topics have been set to comprise the debate questions under Development. The following topics should split into Thematic Sessions and other debate stages during the 8th World Water Forum in 2018:
- Water, energy and food security nexus (Water for food/ Water for energy)
- Inclusive and sustainable growth, water stewardship and industry
- Efficient use of surface water and groundwater - urban and rural
- Infrastructure for sustainable water resource management and services
Considering the above topics about Development:
- What are the major challenges under each topic that concern civil society and communities and need to be raised for debate during the 8th World Water Forum?
- How those challenges apply to problems in your city, community or neighbouring surroundings?
Your feedback will support the organization instances of the Forum in the definition of Thematic Sessions and other opportunities for debate during the event.

Thanks Tchokouatou for your input. Indeed very importan considerations to take on board with regard to competing demands between water supply and sanitation. Along the lines of data and statistics you have mentioned, is it possible to site good case studies from your region or country whereby we can further discuss this issue with specific examples of how the affected stakeholders have addressed this issue?
TCHOKOUATOU GHI... replied:

Dear Ana, many thanks for your valuable input. What you have mentioned is very interesting, especially the success story in Brazil spearheaded by ANA. I hope we can highlight this case study at the Forum so other regions can learn and benefit. Can you please ellaborate a little more on this namely, why has it been so successful? What can you tell us about the "committment" of the people to implement such a programme? Were there any incentives for them who actively ensured such practices? And finally is this practice being scaled-up or scaled-out and in particular are has there been any focus on taking this knowledge to policy level?

Indika Gunawardana replied:
Dear Julio,
Thanks for your contribution. It would be also good to asssess the losses, but at the same time we should consider about the recharge into surface and ground water reserves in the long run, maintaining soil moisture as a whole ecological unit.

Reading the very interesting comment of Mr. Minani it came to my mind the question ¨what comes first the egg or the hen¨? Because he begins saying that Water Management and Development are responsible for poverty reduction, but it is also true that Sustainable Development requieres more than any other types of development schemes the participation of society from the more inner roots. For example Sustainable waste Managment begins in our house. And a society with high porcentage of poverty is the main enemy for Sustainable Development, because the urgent matters pass over the important issues.

It is really good that the issue regarding Food security in the room now. Thanks both Peter and Kanna. Water use for Agriculture: more than 70% of freshwater is used in Agriculture and food production. Is this a burdening topic to be discuss in the WWF2018?

What country are you describing? is someone editing the contributions, I noticed some changes in my last post. Please excuse the typos.
WAFUNIF is a volunteer organsiation comprised of former UN internes from 1945 to present day. They support the work of the UN indirectly through research, seminars and projects on topics relevant to development and peace. Some members are located in cities where the UN is headquartered and may be UN staff or staff of UN sub-agencies, others are not, while a large percentage are based in the Third World.

Has week three commenced? Who is Susan? Just to share some elements from 2012 study done on water resources issue on Peru village. Is there a general consensus that water should be a public good- that is,. that there is a human right to water .... viz. right to development? ( UN Convenant on Economic Rights) . The Peruvian study showed that the rising cost of water supplied in various forms, including transport costs was a major probem in creating greater access of the poor to water- drinking or for other purposes- because of the dry weather patterns in that area of Peru.
Indika Gunawardana replied:
Hi Amelia,
Susana seems a researcher from Venezuela.
Thank you for sharing a bit from Peruvian rural water supply experience. In every country, reaching rural dry areas has remain a challenge. Community managed water supply schemes proven to be much efective in that, but again highly depend on the availability of water resources - quantity and quality.
Any other similar examples?
